Nr 40 Special Edition – The future of Alparc

Dear friends, colleagues, sponsors and supporters of the Alpine Network of Protected Areas (ALPARC),

A 17th working year is drawing to a close for us, and we are sending you a special edition of our newsletter, as an expression of our gratitude; for our joint work program could not possibly be a success without your support and cooperation. We will be able to take these achievements with us during the hopefully somewhat more tranquil New Years period, look back on them with satisfaction, and continue to build on them going forward – perhaps not in the current constellation and organizational form, but on a strengthened basis of professionalism and trust as 2012 unfolds.

Thus I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, your families and employees all the best for the holiday season and the New Year, which I hope will be a healthful and joyful one for all of us – a year during which we feel tremendously energized concerning our important work with and on behalf of the Alpine environment. Moreover, your support and cooperation, which we are very much counting on, will be pivotal when it comes to implementing pending changes.

Michael Vogel, President of the ALPARC International Steering Committee

UNDERSTANDING

The Task Force Protected Areas will remain attached to the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention only until 31 December 2013. Alparc was asked to find the best solution to ensure the continuation of the team’s work after 2013. The working group “Future of Alparc” is endeavouring to endow the network with a new structure and legal status.

LOOKING BACK

Over 16 years ago, in October 1995, the Alpine Network of Protected Areas (ALPARC) was founded. Gradually, this gave rise to a network the likes of which had never existed before on a state level in the Alps. Almost all protected areas with their own staff have been involved in one or other ALPARC campaign. Language barriers were overcome, common interests discovered and differences led to learning opportunities. (...)

TAKING ACTION

The time is ripe for ALPARC to make its presence felt and take action to ensure that the organization has a major say in future decisions: by conducting an active dialogue with ALPARC member states concerning financing and other relevant matters. ALPARC is also founding a new association and has recommended close cooperation with the organs of the Alpine Treaty.

JOINT DECISION MAKING

We call upon all protected areas to actively participate in the foundation meeting of the ALPARC association on 4 September 2012 in Val Poschavio, Switzerland. The time has come to establish a more robust platform that will foster international cooperation and development of the resources needed for it, in keeping with the slogan, Alpine protected Areas: Together for the Alps.

SUPPORTING & TESTIFYING

ALPARC offers… “A broadness of approach that is beneficial and a real exchange of information. In a word, I would say that Alparc is a trigger.” Guido Meeus, National Park Vanoise/F

"We broaden our knowledge base, which benefits our daily activities." Pascal Saulay, Head of “Multimedia” service, National Park Ecrins, France
ALPARC is a matter of meeting: “which gives us new ideas and needed energy, not to do the same, but to innovate, to process new concepts and reinvent our own projects!” Claude Dautrey, Director of the Reception & Communication service, National Park Ecrins, France
