QA - LabexThe role of scientific councils             LOGO ALPARC signature E

Experts from science, protected mountain areas and administration will discuss the role of scientific councils regarding science and management in protected areas.

The workshop will be based on the presentation of various models in organising scientific councils existing in different countries and for different categories of protection. Afterwards, different aspects of scientific councils as an interface between science and protected areas will be discussed: To what extent and under what conditions are scientific councils able to promote scientific research in protected areas? To what extent and under what conditions can they support the management and the policy of a protected area and mediate conflicts? How can they contribute to building networks and cooperation?

Outcomes of the workshop will be recommendations concerning the establishment and the management of scientific councils, an analysis of scientific councils as interfaces between science and mountain protected areas (article in a scientific journal) and inputs to a planned Alpine Space project on the governance of protected areas and the contribution of science.

As the number of participants is limited to 40, the date of registration will be taken into account in the selection of participants.

Please find below the announcement, the programme and the registration form to send back to iscar@scnat.ch

Vse publikacije so v nemškem, francoskem in italijanskem jeziku, in so že na voljo na spletu.

Ta vrsta informativnega gradiva ni zgolj tiskana listina.

Nekatere različice podatkovnih listov, objavljenih v PDF formatu (ki omogoča lažje tiskanje), obravnavajo naslendnja področja; varstvo narave, kmetijstvo, promet, upravljanje z vodami, gozdarstvo in prostorsko planiranje. Objavljeni so na: www.alpine-ecological-network.org.

The signature of the Alpine Convention has marked a new historical turn. This Convention is much more than a treaty among States. It is the international recognition of the fact that a coherent development of the Alps - meant as a territorial system, necessarily requires the definition and the use of common tools, as much as the joint elaboration of policies and strategies, able to exalt the specificity of the territory.

Therefore, the book aims to be a key to access the Alpine Convention, seen not only as an international law treaty, but as a "set of tools" to pursue in a coordinate manner, a long-lasting balance between economic and social development and the need to preserve both the environment and our cultural inheritance.

It is a complete set of tools to work beyond national borders. A set of tools which are available not only to policy and decision makers, but also to the population, that in the Alps and more than in other regions, is closely linked to the territory. A territory that has to be managed with care...

In fact, the Alps are not a barrier to communications that have to be crossed through as quickly as possible, or a mine of resources that have to be exploited without any limits, or an amusement parc.

Last of the wild

Last of the wild: overview of status and monitoring of some wilderness related species in the Natura 2000 network.

Edition: PAN Parks Foundation, 2009

By providing a description of the management and monitoring practices of various protected areas, with regards to chamois, ibex, brown bears, lynx, wolves and white-tailed eagles in its new publication, the PAN Parks Foundation aims to argue for the need for a non-intervention management approach that will ensure healthy and stable populations of these – and other – important wilderness species. In addition, we hope that the present selection of monitoring experience will serve as inspiration to many nature conservation professionals in their handling of wilderness habitats and species around Europe.
